Riding in the shadow of South Sandia Peak (9702 feet) out of Albuquerque, the route will head out into the Staked Plains. In 1541, Spanish conquistador Francisco Coronado described it as follows: "I reached some plains so vast. That I did not find their limit anywhere I went although I travelled over them for more than 300 leagues…with no more landmarks than if we had been swallowed up by the sea." And on and on to Lubbock…

347 mi.
Leaving Lubbock, the riders will travel through miles and miles of irrigated farmland and sparsely populated desert gradually descending from an altitude of 3000 feet to 500 feet in Dallas. Along the way, you will pass through numerous small towns such as Spur, Jayton, Haskell, and Throckmorton. You may be tempted to try your hand at bass fishing in the White River Reservoir or Possum Kingdom Reservoir. You might be tempted, but you better not if you want to make it to Dallas for the night.

Day 5, June 17, Dallas, TX to San Antonio, TX
294 mi.
One of the main reasons for holding the Ride For Hope Coast To Coast is to raise awareness in America of the crisis facing Africa due to HIV and AIDS. To that end, the ride turns south out of Dallas and passes through Waco, Georgetown, the capital city of Austin and San Antonio, home of the Alamo. The varied terrain in this area served as the early training ground for Lance Armstrong.

represents the shortest day of the ride. Our hope
is that we will be able to organize a Century

church in this area to further help to raise
awareness.

Louisiana is like no other state in the United States due to its history, language, culture and food. Traveling right through the middle of Cajun country, in places like Eunice, the residents will be speaking English, but you'll have a hard time understanding the words. Riders will pedal through the Louisiana Prairies, which are characterized by gently rolling plains and marshes on into New Orleans.
